Sakai Experience JAPAN (SEJ) is a service that travelers in Japan can experience Traditional, Local, Real Japanese techniques and customs with
Sakai City
Sakai city is located in Osaka prefecture, Japan. Prefectures are like states and Osaka prefecture is consisted of 33 cities, 9 towns and 1 village. Sakai city is one of them. We want to make Sakai more famous to the world.
Japanese Kitchen Knife
Sakai city is known as one of the biggest cities for producing Japanese Kitchen Knives. Especially for traditional Single edge knives such as Sashimi knife, Deba knife, and Usuba knife.
Workshops
SEJ produces and manage about 10 experiences and workshops in Sakai area which you can enjoy and learn about Japanese traditional things from its professionals with local Japanese interpreters in English.
Japan has a lot of kinds of traditional plays. Noh and Kyougen have been played for over 600 years. You can experience and learn the history and how to move as an actor.
Shamisen is one of Japanese instruments and it is developed in Sakai in 16th century. A lot of Japanese people love Shamisen and played in many occasions such as play and Geisha entertainments.
You can experience sharpening a Japanese knife which you will take with you after the workshop in a sharpner's factory. Master will teach you how to sharpen with a wheel sharpeners.

<What is Miso?> Miso is a traditional Japanese seasoning made by fermenting soybeans, sometimes with rice or barley, salt, and koji (a type of mold). It has a rich umami flavor and is used in soups, marinades, dressings, and sauces. Miso is also prized for its nutritional benefits.
<What you will do> You will learn about miso and how it is made in the beggining. After the explanation, we will mash boiled soy beans into pasete and mix up with little of salt, and molt with our hands. In this workshop, you will get 1.0kg(2.2lb) of Miso paste with you.

<What is Noh and Kyougen?> Noh is a traditional Japanese performing art dating back to the 14th century. It combines music, dance, and drama, often featuring masked actors. Noh plays typically explore themes of spirituality, history, and human emotion, embodying the essence of Japanese culture and aesthetics.
<What you will do> 1. You can learn about the history of Noh and its basic elements. 2. Noh has so many traditional masks which are used in the play depending on the knids. So we will learn about them and put on some of the masks. 3. The master will teach you how to walk around with the mask in basic way and how to act or express.

<What is Shamisen?> Shamisen is a traditional Japanese string instrument with a distinctive sound. It features a small body and three strings, played with a plectrum called a bachi. Shamisen is used in various musical genres, including classical, folk, and contemporary music. Its dynamic sound adds depth and emotion to traditional Japanese performances.
<What you will do> First of all, we will listen to the sounds which the instructor play. After that, you can learn about Shamisen and its history. Then we will get in the lesson with a very famous music. At the end, we will play it together.

<What you will do> In this workshop, you can visit a professional sharpener's factory to experience sharpening knife and fitting the handle. You will get a rough sharpened knife and the master will show you the way how to sharpen the knife with a big wheel sharpener. After sharpening, you will put the handle on the blade. And the master will engrave your favorite letters on the blade.

<What you will do> You will learn how Japanese knives are made at the knife museum with a tour guide. After the museum, we will visit 2 to 3 factories such as blacksmith and sharpener factory.

<What is Wagashi?> Wagashi is a general name of traditional Japanese sweets and they have many kinds. Most of them are made from soybeans. It's very popular and loved by Japanese people for long time. People enjoy Wagashi at home or at a tea celemony.
<What you will do> You will learn about Wagashi little bit in the beggening and see the master's work. The master will teach you how to make Nerikiri which is type of Wagashi and you will try by yourself. After making some Nerikiri, we will taste them with Japanese tea.

<What is Iaido?> Iaido is a martial art that trains the techniques of handling the Japanese sword, with the purpose of cultivating the human character and preserving Japanese culture. It originated in the Muromachi period and is closely related to Kendo.
<What you will do> You will learn about Iaido from the Master and practice Iaido with other participants.
